Slow, Quick: A Retrospective of David Carlyle Platts
The Estate of David Carlyle Platts is delighted to reflect on the success of Slow, Quick, the first retrospective exhibition of David’s work since his passing in 2024.

A bedroom at Bush Cottage
Held over the weekend of the 6th and 7th of June 2026 at Bush Cottage, David’s former home and studio, the exhibition welcomed more than 100 visitors. Guests travelled from across Yorkshire and beyond to view a collection of paintings, drawings, prints and archive material spanning more than five decades of artistic practice.

The weekend brought together artists, collectors, arts professionals, admirers of David’s work and local residents from the surrounding villages. Particularly moving was the number of David’s old friends, former colleagues and students who attended, many of whom are now artists themselves. Visitors shared stories and memories throughout the weekend, remembering not only David’s talent but also his kindness, generosity and genuine interest in people. For many, the exhibition became as much a celebration of David’s life as it was of his art.
Slow, Quick was curated by Dr Kerry Harker, whose previous projects have included exhibitions at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery at the University of Leeds, The Hepworth Wakefield and the Saatchi Gallery in London. Kerry brought together artworks, archive material and personal stories to present a portrait of an artist whose work was deeply connected to the place and people around him.
Working alongside Kerry were Birgitte, David’s close friend and fellow artist, and John, whose care for the gardens helped visitors experience the setting that meant so much to David. Their contribution brought warmth, insight and a strong sense of David’s presence to the exhibition.

The exhibition generated significant sales of sketches, prints and major works, reflecting the continued appreciation for David’s art. The Estate would like to thank everyone who attended, shared memories and helped make the weekend possible. The support shown throughout the exhibition reinforced the importance of preserving and sharing David’s work for future generations.
Although Slow, Quick has now closed, David’s story continues. A selection of artworks remains available through the Estate, and future exhibitions, publications and projects will continue to celebrate his life and work.
